The generally accepted idea that photography deals in instantaneity is unsettled by extended exposures, as these images attempt to operate in the space between the still and the moving image. Over a 90 minute period of stillness, silence and practical darkness, itself not unlike a cinema experience, the sitters often zone out and as a result relinquish their power of self representation offering a rare glimpse of the smiles slippage.
